The following courses are offered in English for exchange students and Swedish history students. Teaching will be provided under the condition that at least five students apply for the course. The courses can be taken as reading courses on an individual level with limited professional guidance. The combined courses do not constitute a program or the equivalent of a full History B- or C-level course. For Swedish history students one of the C- level courses may be used on the C-level for Part 3. Further information is available at www.hist.uu.se.

The Master-level courses offered in English are available to exchange students who are third year history students or the equivalent. Contact Leos Müller (Leos.Muller@hist.uu.se) concerning qualification requirements. Registration procedures are the same as for B- and C-level history courses.

The courses run for about five weeks, which results in some overlapping. For information on the complete schedule contact the instructor for the course. Subject:            History
Title:                  Academic Writing in English
Course code:
Credits:             7.5 ECTS credits (7.5 hp)
Language of
instruction:      English
Prerequisites: Students admitted to any one or two year master programs of the Disciplinary Domain
of Humanities and Social Sciences, PhD students and eligible exchange students.
Level:                Master
Study Period:  Fall/Spring
Content:           This course addresses the needs of graduate students to communicate in written English
about their research and their learning. In other words, it helps them to participate in the
international discourse of their discipline by increasing their familiarity with the conventions and
norms that govern academic writing in English. These norms are both linguistic and rhetorical, and
some are general to all academic writing in English while others are discipline specific. The underlying
pedagogical assumptions are that students’ writing improves as they a) practice the craft of
academic writing in a structured, supportive environment, b) receive instructional feedback on the
form of their language and expression, c) begin to develop a critical perspective on their own written
English, and finally d) begin to develop a metalanguage that both reflects and supports this critical
perspective while also making it possible to communicate more effectively about their own writing
                           and that of their peers.
Examination: Examination will include active participation in the course, and writing a number of texts: 200 word summary of a scholarly article, 500 word review of a scholarly book, 300 word proposal for a research paper or project. Active participation in workshop on peer writing. Checklist of difficult English constructions based on your own writing. 5-10 short exercises from the course textbook.

11. The Legacies of the Holocaust on the Development of Democracy in the EU

Subject: History
Course Title: The Legacies of the Holocaust on the Development of Democracy in the EU
Course Code: 5HA606
Credits: 7.5 ECTS-credits / 7.5 hp
Language of instruction: English
Prerequisites: Bachelor of Arts with a major in history.
A good knowledge of English (corresponding to the level of the Swedish upper secondary school).
Level: Master
Study Period: April – May
Course Content: The aim of this course is to study and analyze the manifold ways in which the legacies of the Holocaust – the virtually successful genocide of European Jewry during the Second World War – affected the development of post-war Western European states and their progress towards viable democracies. The shock and disruption of the Second World War in Europe was a watershed in modern world history, and provided fundamental motivation for the subsequent political, economic and social developments in Western Europe between 1945 and today. Central to this existential shock was the genocide of the Jews by Nazi Germany and its collaborators. Arguably, one result of its absorption into the body politic has been the strengthened drive towards a peaceful and democratic Europe. The moral legacy of Nazi racial-biological-political policies on other destroyed and/or damaged European populations, including the Roma, will also be reviewed.
